Marie Sieberns
Guide
M
arie Sieberns grew up in Lübeck near the Baltic Sea, and from an early age she loved spending time by the water and exploring the life in and around it. During her studies in biology and later biological oceanography, she deepened her understanding of the fascinating world that surrounds us, especially the ocean. Around that time, she also began diving, which eventually led her to train as a scientific diver and experience life beneath the surface from an entirely new perspective.
Marie’s first experiences of the northern regions came through trips to Iceland and later during a nine-month work and travel stay in Canada after finishing high school. These experiences sparked her curiosity about the Arctic and inspired her to engage in research there. This eventually led her to Svalbard, where she started as an intern at the biology department at the University Centre in Svalbard (UNIS), collecting samples from boats around the archipelago. Marie was fascinated by the unique environment and chose to stay and continue working at UNIS.
At the same time, Marie wanted to explore more of Svalbard and therefore began working as a guide on hiking, snowmobile, and boat tours, with a particular focus on wildlife, glaciers, and fjords. Since September 2024, Marie has been working as a guide both on land and at sea in Svalbard, in Tromsø, and in Antarctica. In her free time, she loves being out in nature with her camera, hiking, kayaking, skiing, or ice climbing.
